A Guide To Hemp Derived Cannabinoids

If you’re familiar with Marijuana you may be surprised to learn that there is something very similar to it called Hemp. Although they both come from the same plant species they tend to produce different effects. One is known for its high THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) yield while the other for its high CBD (Cannabidiol) properties. Here is a guide to better understand what Hemp-derived cannabinoids are.

What Are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are natural occurring compounds found in Hemp. Three of the most popular cannabinoids are Cannabidiol (CBD), Delta 9 THC and Delta 8 THC. Although products like Delta 8 THC are growing in popularity; there are a couple of different variants of Hemp-derived THC that you should know about.

Delta 8 THC

The type of THC known as Delta 8 is very similar to Marijuana. However, there is a slight molecular variation, in which a single bond exists on a different molecular strand, as you compare the two. That molecular variance gives the two compounds slightly different properties. This tends to produce a less psychoactive effect when compared to Marijuana.

It’s also important to note that Delta 8 THC has less than .3% of Marijuna THC. Therefore, Delta 8 is classified as a Hemp product because it doesn’t have more than .3% of Delta 9 THC. In addition, Delta 8 THC is usually extracted from Hemp plants and from the Marijuana plant.

Delta 10 THC

Another Hemp-derived extract is Delta 10 THC. The reason why this, and other cannabinoids are called Delta + a number is because of where the double bond in their carbon chain is located. The location of the double bond is the 8th carbon atom in Delta-8 THC; and the location of the double bond is the 9th carbon atom in Delta-9 THC. Also, the location of the double bond is the 10th carbon atom in Delta 10 THC.

This causes the THC to react differently with the endocannabinoid system. These small differences make a big difference in the way we react toTHC. In other words, where the double bond is located tends to produce a different high. However, Hemp-derived THC still isn’t as strong or potent when compared to Marijuana. But, it’s close enough to give you a head change.

THC-O

This cannabinoid stands for Tetrahydrocannabinol-O-Acetate (THC-O) and it’s also known as ATHC. However, this is not to be confused with THCa which is a different cannabinoid altogether. On its own, it tends to be 3x more powerful than Marijuana, but for this reason most companies tend to blend it with another cannabinoid. The mixing of two cannabinoids is known as an entourage effect, which is the idea of mixing 2 cannabinoids together in order to produce a different experience.

Another important thing to keep in mind is that both THC-O and Delta-8 THC originate from the Hemp plant but produce a different experience. While THC-O is 3x stronger than Delta-9 THC (Marijuana), it’s important to note that it’s 5x stronger than Delta-8 THC. The reason why a lot of people would use Delta 8 over Delta 9 in the first place is because it’s less potent. So, if you tend to get anxiety from regular Marijuana you may want to either use small amounts of THC-O or opt out for Delta-8 THC instead.

THCV

What separates THCV (Tetrahydrocannabinol) from regular THC is its chemistry. THCV tends to have a longer hydrocarbon chain than regular THC. Also, THCV doesn’t tend to produce a high when taken in low dosages. Once you start to use higher amounts of THCV it tends to become psychoactive.

Another notable difference with THCV is that it tends to suppress the munchies rather than increase it. What this means is that you shouldn’t expect to get weird cravings like you would with regular THC. One final notable difference with THCV is that it doesn’t tend to trigger anxiety or panic attacks like THC does.

THCP

In order to understand what THCP (Tetrahydrocannabiphorol) is you’ll first have to understand how it’s made. THCP first begins as a substance initially formed as cannabigerolic acid (CBGA), known as the “mother cannabinoid” from which cannabinoids derive from. As carboxyl groups (molecules comprising one carbon, two oxygen, and one hydrogen atom) from the molecule. This happens when the plant part is heated.

THCPA (Tetrahydrocannabiphorol Acid) becomes THCP when it’s heated. Although there are only small amounts found in the Hemp plant, it’s very potent. When we say potent – we mean 33 times more potent than Marijuana. However, just like THC-O it’s usually mixed with another cannabinoid in order to make the experience a lot more pleasant.

HHC

If you’re not familiar with HHC (Hexahydrocannabinol), you’re not alone. Even most experienced Marijuana smokers are not familiar with this cannabinoid. That’s because it’s not Marijuana, it’s Hemp-derived. The experience is slightly different from THC, and it’s a lot more stable than THC.

The most notable difference with HHC is that it doesn’t have a double bond in its carbon chain like the Delta type of cannabinoids. However, if you were to compare the effects of HHC it would be somewhere in the middle between Delta 8 THC and Delta 9 THC.

Drug Testing

We do not recommend any of these cannabinoids if you are subjected to frequent drug testing. Although Hemp-derived THC may not be classified as Marijuana it can still show up on a drug test. That’s because it’s a form of THC, and drug tests are usually looking for any general type of THC. In addition, Marijuana and Hemp-derived THC share a lot of similarities which could show up on a drug test.

The exception to this rule could be certain cannabinoids like CBD, and HHC. That’s because they have little to no actual THC in them. In order to be sure of how much THC is in a product you will want to look at their lab test results. Although a product might show that it only has CBD or HHC, you will want to see how much THC is actually in that particular batch. This is important information to know if you take drug tests often.

Conclusion

All these Hemp-derived cannabinoids tend to produce a high similar to Marijuana. The reason why Hemp-derived cannabinoids are becoming a lot more popular is because Marijuana tends to be illegal on the Federal level. So, many people are turning to the Hemp plant in order to get a similar high without breaking the law. Choosing the right cannabinoid depends on what type of high you’re hoping to experience.
