Britney Spears’ father, James “Jamie” Spears, was suspended from the conservatorship on Wednesday after a petition from the pop star.
Spears’ father managed her money for 13 years through the conservatorship and reportedly also filed a petition to end his role back in September.
L.A. Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny granted Jamie’s removal, saying, “The current situation is untenable. It reflects a toxic environment which requires the suspension of James Spears. ”
When her father filed to step away, he said he “just wants what is best for his daughter.”
“The conservatorship has helped Ms. Spears get through a major life crisis, rehabilitate and advance her career, and put her finances and her affairs in order,” the court document filed by Jamie Spears’ legal team read.
Spears still seeks a complete end to the conservatorship, and her lawyer Mathew Rosengart believes that removing her father is the first step toward that goal.
Free Britney L.A. As has been the case through most of Spears’ Los Angeles court hearings, hundreds of fans gathered outside the courthouse in support of ending her conservatorship.
The “Free Britney” rally saw fans singing her songs and sharing stories about their own experiences with conservatorships. A follow-up rally is expected this afternoon in West Hollywood.
