17 Hurt after LAPD Detonation of Explosive Devices [Los Angeles, CA]

Major Explosion Damages Homes and Injures 17 People, Including Police Officers in South Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, CA (July 2, 2021) – Thursday night, 17 people were injured after a bomb squad detonated explosive devices that had been seized from a home.

Officers responded to a home on the 700 block of East 27th Street after receiving a report of fireworks being stored.

The LAPD then found several thousand pounds of illegal fireworks on Wednesday morning.

In addition, they also found improvised explosive devices that were “more unstable.” An LAPD bomb squad proceeded to transfer the devices into the iron chamber of a semi-truck that was intended to contain explosive material.

At 7:37 p.m., police intentionally detonated the devices, believing the vehicle would contain the explosion.

The injured parties were later described as people ranging from age 42 to 85.

Nine LAPD officers and an officer from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were treated for minor injuries.

Six civilians were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Three victims were considered to be suffering from serious injuries, and three were suffering from minor injuries.

At this time, the identities of the victims remain unknown. Once available, more information will be released.
