L.A. Pausing Johnson & Johnson Vaccinations After Blood Clot Concerns

Los Angeles County is pausing the use of Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines after raised concerns over a rare blood clot.

Both the CDC and FDA recommended the pause in the U.S. after finding a blood clot called cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) in six of its 6.8 million patients to date.

All six of the affected patients were women between the ages of 14 and 48.

“CDC will convene a meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on Wednesday to further review these cases and assess their potential significance,” the CDC and FDA said in a joint statement. “Until that process is complete, we are recommending a pause in the use of this vaccine out of an abundance of caution”

L.A. Public Health said it will be allowing those with J&J appointments an opportunity to get one of the other vaccines.

“This pause will last until the FDA and CDC complete their review, which is expected to take several days,” L.A. Public Health said on Tuesday. “Vaccine providers in Los Angeles County will contact patients about rescheduling or providing a new appointment for Pfizer or Moderna vaccine.”

The Southern California counties of San Bernardino, Ventura and Riverside have also announced that they will no longer be offering the J&J vaccine.
