Saturday’s game between USC and Cal will be postponed after a COVID outbreak within the Cal Bears team.
Cal Berkeley athletic director Jim Knowlton made the announcement Tuesday, stating the team was tested after a handful of players tested positive for COVID-19.
“Due to additional impact on specific position groups, we have decided to postpone Saturday’s game,” Knowlton said in a statement. “We have had multiple COVID-19 positives within our program, and we are taking every step we can to mitigate the spread and protect the greater community.”
In their previous game against Arizona, Cal played without 24 players and coaches, including its starting quarterback Chase Garbers, due to positive tests, according to the Associated Press. This week, several player had been unable to practice, which led to the postponement.
Garbers later expressed frustration with the University Health Services COVID-19 testing regulations, tweeting they “should’ve never happened” since they were not mandated. He added the university said they could not participate in football activities if refused to take COVID-19 tests.
USC was informed about the COVID outbreak and both teams agreed to reschedule, with the postponed game now taking place on December 4.
USC has a 4-5 record in the Pac-12 division this season and lost its previous game against Arizona St., 31-16 on November 6.
