The Pope of Buddhism His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III
For decades, the exceptional acts of kindness and generosity of His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III have touched many lives and amazed society. He has always lived a simple life of humility and given selflessly to others without any concern for his own wellbeing. From a very young age, he has been known to be the Grand Dharma King who holds supreme knowledge and Dharmas that many eminent Buddhist leaders, including rinpoches and monastic elders, have spent their lives seeking. Today, living in California and having been officially recognized as the incarnation of the primordial Buddha, His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III is still tirelessly teaching Buddhist leaders, Holy Gurus, all kinds of Buddhist practitioners, as well as people from all walks of life, as always.
Before coming to the United States, His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III was living in China, popularly known as Master Yi Yungao. Prior to being recognized as a Buddha, he was a renowned polymath of exceptional talents in art, of encyclopedic erudition, and with magnificent physical power. He is distinguished in the “Healing Vidya,” which, according to Buddhism, is defined as the perfected abilities to heal the sick, as well as repair or restore any inanimate object back to its original condition. With such an ability, the then Master Yi Yungao tirelessly tended to anyone who sought his help and never hesitated to do all that he could to help them recover from their illnesses. There were times when more than 300 patients came to see him on a single day and he never turned anyone away. He never accepted any fees from the sick, and in consideration of their hardships, always prescribed the most inexpensive remedies that even the poorest could afford.
In addition to the Healing Vidya, His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III also stands at the pinnacle of the other four Vidyas, which he applies to help all kinds of living beings. In Buddhism, all knowledge and skills within the universe are classified into five categories. Having “Vidyas” means one has perfect mastery and commanding abilities in these categories, to the extent that one excels all experts in the respective fields. Shakyamuni Buddha stipulated in the Sutras that all Bodhisattvas must possess the Five Vidyas. A Buddha is undoubtedly the King among all who possess the Five Vidyas. Traditionally, the Five Vidyas are categorized as the Healing Vidya, Sound Vidya, Craftsmanship Vidya, Causality Vidya and Inner Realization Vidya. Anyone who has been recognized as a Bodhisattva is expected to have some abilities in the Vidyas, whereas a Buddha must have perfect and supreme accomplishment in all Five Vidyas.

Recognized according to a thousand-year-old system
During the past 10 years or so, more than 100 significant Buddhist leaders including the most prominent Dharma kings, regent Dharma kings, and great rinpoches of major Buddhist sects have officially recognized him to be the incarnation of the primordial Buddha, Dorje Chang Buddha. These Buddhist leaders who have status-recognition authority within Buddhism include Dharma King Dodrupchen, who is the sole lineage-holder of the highest Rainbow-Body Accomplishment Dharma; Dharma King Penor, who was the third supreme world-leader of the Nyingma sect; Dharma King Achuk, who was the foremost monastic of great virtue in modern Tibet; Dharma King Gongbao Dumu Quji, who is the Yidam-Dharma Initiation Master of the 17th Karmapa; Dharma King Jigme Dorje, who is the supreme world-leader of the Jonang sect; Sleep Yoga Dharma King Mindrolling Trichen, who was a master of the Dalai Lama; Dharma King Trulshik, Dharma King Taklung Tsetul, and Dharma King Chogye Trichen, all three of whom were masters of the Dalai Lama; Dharma King Jigdal Dagchen Sakya, who is the supreme leader of the Sakya sect; Regent Dharma King Shamarpa, who was a master of the 17th Karmapa; Regent Dharma King and National Master Goshir Gyaltsab, who is the Sutra-Master of the 17th Karmapa; and others. Those recognitions were conducted in accordance with the thousand-year-old system integral to the recognition of reincarnated Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and rinpoches. Letters of recognition, congratulation, and corroboration were officially issued.
The Supreme Dharma King of the Jonang Sect Jigme Dorje Rinpoche stated officially that His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III possesses “complete proficiency in Exoteric and Esoteric Buddhism and perfect mastery of the Five Vidyas.” The Dharma King also called His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III “a shining paragon among Buddhas,” and acclaimed that his accomplishments are “truly unprecedented in the past few thousand years, outshining the accomplishments of all others, both ancient and modern.”
The revered Xiazhu Qiuyang Rinpoche, incarnation of Venerable Naropa, stated in his official recognition letter that the accomplishments of His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III are “unimaginable and truly miraculous, and that such accomplishments transcend the ordinary, expressing both the describable and indescribable absolute truth of the Buddha Dharma.”
Dorje Rinzin Rinpoche, incarnation of the founder of the Mindrolling Lineage Rigzin Terdak Lingpa, recognized His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III as “the Master of the Five Buddhas.” He officially stated, “This highest leader of Buddhism in the dharmadhatu has manifested here on earth a state of great brightness that entails complete proficiency in Exoteric and Esoteric Buddhism and perfect mastery of the Five Vidyas.”
Mastery of the Five Vidyas
Perfect mastery of the Five Vidyas means, to the very least, knowledge and abilities that are above and beyond those of professional experts. For example, the Sound Vidya relates to language and vocalization. The Buddha can instantly compose a rhyming poem based on any topic suggested by anyone. Craftsmanship Vidya requires one to achieve a whole array of distinguished abilities in art, architecture, design, engineering, and so forth. Most artists use one or two media to create works in one or two styles, and it usually takes them years of training to become proficient at their skills. His Holiness the Buddha is able to use any media or techniques to create art in any style or tradition. Professional artists are stunned and puzzled by the extraordinary artistry he demonstrates in his art, encompassing oil paintings, ink paintings, calligraphy, seal carving, sculpture, and other media. Many art experts have spent years studying his art only to realize that they simply cannot fathom his techniques nor replicate his artistry. Some of his artworks are currently exhibited at the International Art Museum of America in San Francisco.
Causality Vidya means one must have complete and perfect knowledge about the inner logic and causality of all phenomena, as well as all phenomena’s outer correlation with science. His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III once made an open and documented promise that within the then next five years, he would answer any questions from anyone, and that if there were any questions that he failed to answer correctly, he would deem himself unqualified in teaching Buddha Dharma. During the following five years, people from all levels of society and from all walks of life, including scholars, university presidents, scientists, writers, and ordinary folks asked all kinds of difficult questions, encompassing Buddhist and non-Buddhist topics. Not only did the Buddha answer all questions, his insightful and illuminating answers often awed the questioners. Today, those audio-recorded questions and answers are being avidly studied in many Buddhist centers around the world.
Inner Realization Vidya means having omniscient inner wisdom and realization power. It is with such an attainment of pure inner virtue that His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III touches the lives of numerous Buddhists and non-Buddhists, motivating them to abandon evil, follow goodness, and give of themselves to help others, and become unhindered by worldly matters.
His Holiness the Buddha himself is completely unhindered by worldly matters. He does not care at all about material comfort, fame, or fortune. His lifelong vow is to teach Buddhism and help all beings unconditionally, and not accept any offerings from anyone. He is also indifferent to either honor or defamation. When honored, he is unmoved. Despite receiving acclaims and recognitions unprecedented in the field of Buddhism, to this date, His Holiness maintains that the title of Dorje Chang Buddha III means nothing to him, calling himself “a servant of living beings” instead. When defamed, he never speaks a word to defend himself. Rather, out of great compassion and empathy, he has always spoken kindly and protectively when asked about what he thinks of his slanderers.
Epicenter of Buddhism Shifted from the East to the West
Since His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III moved to the United States more than two decades ago, the epicenter of Buddhism has naturally shifted from the Eastern to the Western hemisphere. He said that “the American people are kind and noble. This is a spiritually wealthy, powerful, and blessed country.” His disciples have built Buddhist institutes and grand temples in New York, Washington D.C., the states of Nevada, California, and other locations. Some of the famous temples are such as the Hua Zang Si Temple in San Francisco, the Holy Miracles Temple in Los Angeles, the Benevolence Temple in Las Vegas, The Holy Vajrasana Temple and Retreat Center in Fresno, and others. Many new temples will also be established in the Buddhist city currently being developed around the Holy Heavenly Lake in California.
It is also here in the United States that His Holiness the Buddha has made his highest Dharmas available to the world, including The Supreme And Unsurpassable Mahamudra Of Liberation, and Imparting The Absolute Truth Through The Heart Sutra. His Holiness the Buddha also imparted The Great Dharma of Zen Practice. It is the first time in Buddhist history that the highest Buddha Dharmas are being taught in America by the Buddha himself. Many have learned the supreme Dharmas from His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III and attained openly verified great accomplishments. Hence, more and more Buddhists including sectarian leaders and eminent monastics are coming from all over the world to pursue the great Dharmas from the Buddha.
Throughout his life, His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III has not spoken empty theories. Whatever he teaches, he has always led by example in words and deeds. The key emphasis in the cultivation part of The Supreme And Unsurpassable Mahamudra Of Liberation is to selflessly give of oneself for the sake of others. His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III has, since his early life, led by example in carrying out such practices: physically taking care of the sick, the abandoned, the helpless, and people of all ages experiencing all kinds of adversities. The Buddha has no reservations in giving of himself altruistically in benevolence to living beings. For all the acts of kindness that he has performed throughout his life, he never accepts anything in return. He also does not accept any offerings for teaching Buddha Dharmas.
Holy Guru disciples of the Buddha have also reinstated the long-lost Holy Exams. Buddhist practitioners can take those exams and find out whether learning Buddhism has practically benefited their bodies, minds, and realizations. The results of these exams also enable Buddhists to differentiate between Holy Guru masters, respectable and virtuous masters, and charlatans.
Teaching the true essence of Buddhism for Buddhists to attain wisdom and accomplishments
The scope of Buddhism taught by Shakyamuni Buddha is extremely broad and profound. When the original teachings were passed down and interpreted from one generation to another, over thousands of years, much of the true essences have been lost. Generations of leaders specialize in and teach what has been passed down from within their respective traditions. Only a Buddha is able to teach Buddhism in a non-sectarian way, in its true essence and entirety. Today, Buddhists are blessed that His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III teaches Buddhism in the same way that Shakyamuni Buddha did 2,500 years ago. They also find the teachings of His Holiness Dorje Chang Buddha III very relatable, applicable to their daily lives, and efficaciously guiding them toward attaining wisdom and all kinds of accomplishments upon the foundation of compassion.
