Scooter Driver Dies in Fatal Crash on Capital City Freeway

CAPITAL CITY, CA (July 6, 2021) – 21-year-old Carlos Chavez died Saturday morning after a fatal collision on Capital City Freeway.

The incident happened just after 3:00 a.m. July 3, on northbound Capital City Freeway. Officers arrived just south of the American River Bridge.

According to authorities, Chavez was riding an electric rental scooter northbound on Capital City Freeway. There, a northbound Nissan Altima collided with Chavez, who was riding in the same direction.

Moments later, a Toyota 4Runner traveling northbound also collided with Chavez. The Toyota driver called 911 to report hitting an unknown object in the road.

Investigators later described the Nissan Altima driver as a 31-year-old Sacramento man. The Altima driver told authorities that Chavez was riding the scooter in front of him when they collided.

Responding officers pronounced Carlos Chavez dead on scene due to the extent of his condition.

At this time, authorities do not currently believe that drugs or alcohol were factors. However, an active investigation remains ongoing.
