Driver Arrested after Head-On DUI Crash on Highway 4 in Calaveras
CALAVERAS, CA (April 22, 2021) – Saturday morning, Brooke Buchanan, 21, of Merced was arrested after a head-on DUI crash on Highway 4.
The crash was reported shortly after 10:00 a.m. on April 17. Dispatchers arrived to the scene just west of Calaveras Big Trees State Park.
Buchanan was driving a 2006 Honda Civic west on Highway 4 while a 2004 Ford F-250 was heading east. For suspected DUI reasons, the Honda crossed into the center line and collided head-on with the Ford.
First responders found Buchanan and her passenger, Dominic Appleby, 21, of Merced with moderate to major injuries and took them to a local hospital for treatment.
The driver of the Ford, Thomas Sullivan, 61, of Dorrington, sustained minor injuries and was treated at Adventist Health Sonora.
Authorities revealed that at the time of the crash, neither Buchanan nor Appleby were wearing a seatbelt.
Moreover, officials arrested Buchanan for felony DUI, causing injury.
